discover: wave & rome

I heard listened to Wandering Wolf courtesy of Dalton Diehl who suggested some songs for a summer playlist in my interview with him and I really suggest you listen to it to get you in the mood (is that weird?).

Okay, so you did it? Good. Now, you can tell me what you think on my Twitter but I think you generally get why this band deserves a discover post. It's a really pretty song! Yes, I do mean to pretty.

So, Wandering Wolf is an indie rock band from Nashville, Tennessee that began in 2013 and is fronted by Sam Tinnesz (picture below).

This is Sam
It was created with his co-writer and co-producer, Josh Farro and was borne out of an effort to push and depart from genre boundaries. Their EP, Across The Map was released in March 2015 and it was produced by Matt Bronleewe and mixed by Chad Howatt. It's an all round awesome EP that you can listen to on their Soundcloud.

Check them out on Twitter and Facebook and get their EP from iTunes.

interview: dalton diehl of young brother

Okay, so I got an interview from Dalton Diehl, of Young Brother and here it is. Hope you guys enjoy learning more about the Kamikaze singer!

this is him.

Check out Young Brother on Soundcloud, Twitter and Facebook!

----

1. Say a little about yourself.
I live in Nashville, TN. Write songs for a living. Massive Denver Broncos fan!

2. Musical influences?
At this moment: Justin Timberlake, N'sync, Tove Lo, Nick Jonas, Kendrick Lamar, Prince

3. Favourite book, song/album, artist and movie?
- A Million Miles in a Thousand Years (Donald Miller),
- currently: Can't Feel My Face (The Weeknd)
-  I just love movies in general. I don’t know if I have a favorite. I love a great story.

4. How did you get your start or what pushed you into the music business?
Started writing songs after I got two concussions playing college football. Ended up teaming up with a manager in Nashville who got me and my band a record deal with EMI.

5. In your interview with New York Minute Magazine, you said that you used to do Christian music but you sort of broke away from that sphere. How does your background in Christian music influence the music you do now, if it does at all?

Musically, it doesn’t really at all. The funny thing is though, 90% of the people who I'm writing my favorite stuff with right now, all used to be in the Christian music industry.

6. Some artists don't like to restrict themselves to just one genre, like Imagine Dragons- they like to diversify, but I would say your music is alternative pop?  Do you identify your music as being part of any particular genre(s)?
If I had to put a genre on it, yes, it would be alt pop. I prefer records that keep me guessing as a listener so I imagine when I do put out a full length, it would touch on a few different styles.

7. What are your plans for your debut album, now that Kamikaze has been released?
Right now, I'm just writing non stop. There's a few things in the works but none of which I can really elaborate on at the moment.

8. What songs would you recommend for a summer playlist?
There's been ALOT of great music this summer...just a few would be:

- Can't Feel My Face (The Weeknd)

- King (Years & Years)

- Wandering Wolf (Wave & Rome)

- Get Free (Whissell)

9. You wrote the songs on the Kamikaze EP with your producer(?) What is co-writing with another person like?
Ruslan Odnoralov and Dustin Burnett - Some co-writes can be weird but not with those guys. we must have all been on the same wave length. we were all hungry to put out something a little left of center but still felt like accessible.

10. Is there any advice you have for other musicians?
Don’t put a time limit on your dream. In this business, NOTHING happens fast. And if it does, it will be gone just as fast as it came. Take your time and put out good art that you really believe in.

11. Do you play any instruments?
I can play guitar and piano. Not at any impressive level. Which is why I mainly just sing when playing live.

12. Why Young Brother?
I have one brother who is older than me so…I am in fact the young brother.

I wanted a name that would always be me.

Thanks Dalton, for answering my questions (he's got great taste doesn't he?). I hope I can work with him more in the future. Hope you liked that- it's pretty much all I've got for the moment.

interview: the score

What is up blogosphere?! So, remember that post on the Abercrombie and Fitch-like dudes of The Score? (I remember. Red Bull is bad for you kids!). Well, they agreed to an interview of sorts and after a few mishaps, here it is! Enjoy!

***

- What inspired the band name? We struggled for weeks trying to find  the "perfect" band name and our first show was coming up fast, so we really needed one ASAP. We were at Edan's apartment skimming through GQ and a section caught our attention titled "The Score." It had a good ring to it, and we liked the musical reference. So it stuck.

- How did you two meet and what pushed you to form The Score?
We met about 4 years ago through a mutual friend at Universal Motown Records. We were both playing the pop cuts game, writing and producing songs for other pop artists. We hit it off at the first session and started working more and more and within a year we landed Kat Graham's second single on A&M/Octone. Over time we noticed a lot of the songs we were writing were less pop and more "band" sounding, and while A&Rs weren't interested in that type of music at the time, we still felt the music should get out there. So we started a band.

- What was the turning point in your lives when you realized that music was what you wanted to do?I think it was winning the battle of the bands in high school. -Edan"Probably when I wrote and released a couple songs my sophomore year in college. One of my friends was driving around and my song popped up on her friend's iPod. She called me in the car and I was kind of amazed that some kid I didn't know was playing my music because they liked it”. - Eddie
- What was the inspiration for 'Oh My Love'?

"Oh My Love" was the first song we wrote when we moved to LA in October. The new scenery definitely mixed things up and brought a new sound out of us. And the whole journey of moving for this dream inspired us to write an uplifting song, sorta to build confidence in ourselves and what we were doing. Fun fact: we wrote, produced and recorded that entire song by ourselves in Edan's apartment!
- Are the religious undertones in the song on purpose?"When I was writing the lyrics I wasn't thinking religiously as much as about being in love and celebrating that. But the interpretation is subjective to the listener and that's the beautiful thing about songwriting"-Eddie

- Who are your vocal influences (Eddie)?"My vocal influences are all over the place. I grew up on classic rock and motown so Paul McCartney, Elton John, Stevie Wonder were big influences on me growing up. Paul McCartney really resonated with me because he could literally do everything..he could be this amazing hard rock singer like in "Oh Darling" and then sing a song like "Yesterday". Modern influences vocally would probably be Ryan Tedder and James Morrison...those guys are just insane vocally and really push modern male pop/rock singing to a new level. -Eddie

Eddie

- Which musicians/bands influence you?"We're influenced from everything. Classic rock and motown were big influences on me. Ryan Tedder and the way he writes is also a big influence on both of us. I also listen to a lot of British rock and country believe it or not haha. The more influences you have the better songwriter I think it makes you". -Eddie

I was a jazz dude growing up, listening to musicians like Miles Davis and Wayne Shorter, pianists like bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, Brad Mehldau. Funk soul fusion groups like Weather Report, Soulive, Medeski Martin and Wood, John Scofield. That stuff is just in my DNA at this point. Today I listen to a lot of alt. radio and that's helped push our sound in a more alternative direction. -Edan

Edan

- Who writes the songs?"We both write. Eddie is more of a traditional songwriter and Edan more a traditional producer. Every song is different though".
- How would you describe 2014 in terms of your growth musically and what are your hopes for 2015?We've grown a lot in the past year, especially in the last couple of months. Our ability to churn out great records quickly has hit a peak, and we adjusted our sound and rebranded across the board. Oh My Love opened a lot of doors for us-- we did a bunch of cowrites in NYC last week including American Authors' guitarist James Shelley , and we have a bunch more cool cowrites lined up for this year. We're releasing a second single very soon.
- Who would you love to open for/tour with?

There are so many bands we'd love to open for/tour with. One Republic, Walk the Moon, The 1975 to name a few. We really admire them and they're in the same world as us musically-- would make for an awesome show.
- Who would you love to collaborate with?

Ryan Tedder
Ryan Tedder obviously because we're both heavily influenced from him. Tim Pagnotta is a producer we really admire. The Black Keys guys would be amazing to work with. And Justin Timberlake because he's the man???

- You hit shuffle on you iPods, what are the first three songs to play?

"hmmm probably "Take Me to Church" buy Hozier, "Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac, and "Cop Car" by Keith Urban -Eddie

Shut Up and Dance by Walk the Moon, Spanish Joint by D'angelo, Stop This Train by John Mayer -Edan
- What book did you read last?

Image result for the alchemist

"haha I need to read more...probably "The Alchemist" which I re-read a couple months ago".-EddieI don't read. Is that bad?? Haha -Edan
- Any fun facts about you two?"I used to play football and actually have an MBA in Finance".-Eddie

When I was in high school, I assembled a team of kids from around the world to create a Star Wars video game. The game got so popular that LucasArts called my house to accuse me of copyright infringement!! Not even kidding haha. -Edan
- Do you have offers from any labels yet? We're in talks with a lot of majors right now. Oh My Love has gotten an amazing response, so we're psyched.

- Any advice for indie acts waiting for a break?"I don't think you can "wait" for a break. Edan and I have been writing and working on music almost every night for the past 3 years together trying to hone our craft and continuing to get better. I would say the biggest thing we are still learning is that trying to make it as a band is very similar to starting a small business. It's more than just the music. It's building a team of core people, marketing your brand, developing your sound/brand, and that's on top of writing/producing really strong songs. It's everything you don't learn in music school or school in general for that matter. -Eddie

"Ditto, and I'd also say embrace the Do-It-Yourself mentality. Produce and record your own music, pitch your own music, build your own website, create your own videos. If you don't know how to do it, learn. It's important to build a team but until you find those truly dedicated people, you're the only one that will understand your vision and have the passion to make it happen quickly. Once people see what you can achieve on your own, they'll be more willing to help." -Edan

***

....aaaand, that's it for now! Lots of thanks to Google and the guys' Facebook pages for the pictures (no images belong to me AT ALL) and the guys themselves for even bothering with me. Their new song 'Catching Fire' is out now (listen to it in my Song of the Day tab to your right) and it is awesome (duh). I detect Icarus references!

interview: as december falls

Bethany Curtis, Ande Hunter, Danny Bligh, Timmy Francis, Lukas James.

This is As December Falls.

They're from Nottingham in the UK, established in 2014 as it says on their logo, they were , and their guitar player does this thing that's just...and the lead singer Bethany is just...her voice!

Anyway, I suggested an interview to them and they kindly replied...in kind? Their manager, Jason has been such a big help throughout the process.

Bethany is lead vocals (her voice is just...), Ande (he's cute) plays lead guitar and sings too, Timmy plays bass and Lukas plays the drums.

Here's the interview (my questions...my rhetoric professor would sigh...)

***

- On your Facebook account, it says that you changed the band name twice, so what was the influence for the current band name?
Not entirely sure how that happened, the band name has never changed since it was created! Ande came up with it when we were recording in the studio, we liked it because it represents everything falling into place for us as a band in December; the EP was written, the studio was booked and we finally had a full line up!

- How did you all meet?
Timmy and Ande have known each other the longest, playing gigs together whilst in other bands since they were 16.
Timmy and Danny met over Join My Band and auditioned Bethany to sing.
Lukas went to music college with Timmy.

- For how long have you been a band?
The band really finally came together in December 2013 but has only been active with shows and released music since summer 2014. They spent the first part of the band's life writing music and preparing the EP.

- What are the influences for your songs?
A lot of it depends on what we've been listening to at the time. We don't feel like we get influenced by bands because we like to make our own thing but we definitely get inspired by bands like Fall Out Boy, Modern Baseball, Lights and Macklemore. Anything that we feel is good music really. It just gets us in a writing mood!

Their EP, A Home Inside Your Head, and the titular song is WHOA.

- How old are you guys?
Bethany: 19
Ande: 23
Lukas: 22
Timmy: 22
Danny: 21

- Are you all involved in the songwriting process?
Timmy is the back bone to the band when it comes to writing, he writes most of the rhythmic skeletons. The rest of the band then write their own parts around Timmy's initial idea.

- What bands/musicians personally/generally inspire all of you?
Bethany: Marmozets, You Me At Six,
Ande: Guns N' Roses, Afi, Mago De Oz
Lukas: One Direction
Timmy: Fall Out Boy, Modern Baseball, Blink 182
Danny: We Are The In Crowd, Pierce The Veil

- When do you plan on releasing an album?
At the moment the plan is to focus on single releases with a potential EP out this year. Our next single 'Capture' will be released at the end of March.

- What book did each of you read last?
Ande: I'm in the middle of Slash's autobiography. Last book before that was House of Cards.
Bethany:
Danny: The Saga of Darren Shann
Timmy: Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

- Are any of you in high school?
No, we're all at university or art college.

- How does your EP release make you feel about how far you've come?
We actually recorded it nearly a year ago so the songs feel really old for us. We feel that we've improved a lot and that shows a lot in the strength of the next single.

- You hit shuffle on your music player, what's the first song to play?
Comets - Charlie Simpson

- What bands would you love to open for?
Don Broco, We Are The In Crowd or Marmozets would be amazing.

- What bands would you love to collaborate with?
Macklemore or gym class heroes ! That would be so much fun.

- What do you think about the music scene in your area of England currently?

Well the music scene in Nottingham is literally amazing, we have so many great, talented artists from different genres breaking through. From hip-hop through to metal, this town is literally buzzing with great shows and acts.

Even though it wasn't a face-to-face interview, I still feel so honoured to have been able to ask them these questions (and you know, get answers).

As they said , their sound is influenced by Fall Out Boy (mine would be too if I had a sound, but check out my review of American Beauty/American Psycho to understand my love for those guys. FOB!), so if you're into Marmozets (check out my post on them to see if you are) or FOB, then you will probably love these guys.

Visit their website, to get access to merch and their EPs. Also, follow them on their various social media (mostly because their so nice. Links below.)
